Job Summary: Manufacturer (Meat)
Murdoch's is looking to recruit a capable and enthusiastic person to join our meat manufacturing team on the preparation, manufacture and packaging of award-winning meat products. No previous meat or butchery experience is needed however a keen eye for detail, meticulously following procedures and good physical fitness for manual handling is a must. Shifts are early, from around 6am so if you're an early-bird this could suit you!
Murdoch Butchers is certified by SALSA, operating to the highest food standards set out for small businesses.
This role may offer progression for someone who is keen to learn and develop themselves including technical skills, qualifications in meat manufacturing and management/leadership.

Job Description:
Murdoch's makes and supplies award-winning sausages, burgers, bacon and other fresh meat products to convenience stores and supermarkets across Scotland, as well as for online UK distribution.As part of the butchery manufacturing team you will assist with physical preparation, production, packaging and labelling of manufactured meat products (eg burgers, sausages, bacon, haggis) for our retail and wholesale customers.
This will include:

Working in the butchery manufacturing team.

Preparation, handling and portioning of meat for production

(no de-boning or previous knife-skills required)

Weighing of meat and ingredients for manufacture

Lifting and manual handling

Following strict processes and instruction

Operation of machinery eg. automatic packers/sealers

Packaging and labelling
-
Cleaning: maintaining hygiene and quality standards

Record keeping
-
Working in a cool environment
-
Working under pressure to order deadlines so our produce is as fresh as possible for our customers.

We are a small team handling a large volume of meat products. At busy times this role may include working in other departments within the business to get our full range out to our customers, including in our bakery where similar tasks may occur eg. preparation of products, packing, labelling.

We are looking for someone who can work well within a small production team.

Manual handling, lifting and carrying weights of up to and around 25kg is part of the job, so a basic level of physical fitness is required.

You will have good numeracy skills and be capable of following strict recipes, maintaining excellent quality standards and have good attention to detail. You will be motivated and enthusiastic, demonstrating good time-management and organisational skills

You will have basic computing skills for printing labels and record-keeping.

Must be able to handle beef, lamb, pork and poultry meats.

Desirable Experience
We are looking for people who are capable of diligently following procedures and instructions to maintain high quality and hygiene standards. (Full training will be given).
Food handling experience would be a benefit but not essential.
Good personal hygiene is essential.
Salary, Working Hours & Holidays
Starting rate of pay from NMW £11.44 per hour* (Based on age, will change in April 2025)
Three month work trial/probationary period. (Additional hours may be available at busy times). Hourly rate, paid four weekly. Four week work trial followed by three month probationary period. During the work trial you will be paid at basic rate (again, depending on experience) and given full induction training.

Rate will be formally reviewed/agreed after successful completion of all necessary training and probationary period.

Statutory 28 days annual holiday (pro-rata based on hours accrued) includes Christmas Day/New Year's Day.

Hours can vary depending on demand (average 40 hours per week over the year)

Overtime available at busy times

Monday to Friday, some Saturdays depending on workload.
